After the sixth century, Ananda was one of two monks who became increasingly important in Chinese Buddhist art, the other being Kashyapa, who was older than Ananda and renowned for his supernatural powers. Both were disciples of the Buddha Shakyamuni. Ananda, who was also the Buddha's cousin, served as Shakyamuni's personal attendant and had a notably prodigious memory. Known as a champion of women's rights, he also established an order of nuns.
