As a journeymen, the cabinetmaker Johann Daniel Sommer must have worked in Paris before returning to his native Germany, where he introduced the highly complicated "boulle" marquetry, incorporating horn, tortoiseshell and various metals. This unusually precious wig cabinet was made for Johann Gottfried von Guttenberg (1654-1698), prince-bishop of Würzburg and duke of Franconia, as indicated by the mirrored monogram "JVG" on the lid. Since the morning coiffure played an essential part in courtly etiquette, the decoration of all accessories needed in this exaggerated procedure had to reflect the owner's aristocratic status.
