S\u014dhei studied under Tanomura Chikuden (1779\u20131835), a leading literati painter and native of S\u014dhei\u2019s hometown on the southern island of Ky\u016bsh\u016b . In this painting, completed only about eight years prior to his premature death, S\u014dhei depicted the vitality of young, growing bamboo, one of his favorite subjects.
