The bold, applied ornament on the fluted border of this dish shows the pervasive influence in England of the court style of Louis XIV. The dish is engraved with the royal arms of George I which suggest that it was commissioned by the Jewel Office, the division of the royal household responsible for silver and gold. It was probably supplied to Joseph Addison (1672-1719) when he became Secretary of State in 1717, a position which entitled him to an allowance of silver from the Crown.
