With the spread of Chan (Zen) Buddhism in China in the tenth century, louhans, enlightened Buddhist sages, were often represented as monks performing spiritual exercises. Sitting on roughly hewn rocks, these three louhans are engaged in study and meditation. Their robes were originally colored and gilded on a gesso ground.
