The broad, liquid strokes and vivid transparency of color in this image demonstrate the success with which Childe Hassam transposed his Impressionist style into the medium of watercolor. In 1912, in his full maturity as an artist, he painted a series of watercolors at his favorite coastal setting of Appledore (one of the Isles of Shoals off the coast of New Hampshire).
