This set of field study photographs was taken in the Winter Park Gardens suburb of Wilmington, North Carolina on November 30, 2001 and December 1, 2001. Originally part of Harnett Township, Winter Park Gardens was divided into five-acre truck farms. Now it is a suburban neighborhood in Wilmington, North Carolina. While some farm lots – including a horse farm – remained in the neighborhood until the 1970s, most of the farms were divided into residential lots of approximately one acre. The development is situated in part inside a Carolina Bay. At one time, the neighborhood had three natural lakes. Drainage canals and culverts reduced their size considerably. The soil inside the bay is rich, dark, poorly drained, and organic. This soil supports live oaks, pines, turkey oaks, post oaks, magnolias, gums, and wild vines. Edmund E. Burke’s garden (shown in the set), located inside the bay, produces different fruits and vegetables during the year including cabbages, peppers, tomatoes, onions, okra, cucumbers, squash, and fruits trees. Corn, melons, and nut trees perform poorly in this soil. The edges, located on the rims of the bay, are white to yellow sands that have high porosity, and support pines, scrub oaks, and ferns. Also included in this set are a few photographs taken inside the bay during a summer downpour in 2011Free picture Field Study Photographs of the Winter Park Gardens Suburb of Wilmington, North Carolina integrated with the OffiDocs web apps
