This image from Buffon\u2019s Histoire naturelle is supposedly an engraving of a skeleton kept in the Cabinet du Roi, which housed the scientific collections of French royalty from 1633 to 1935. Collections of such \u201cnotable\u201d artefacts were known as cabinets of curiousities, the precursors to modern museums. This skeleton would have been one among many other \u201ccuriousities\u201d, demonstrating the lack of understanding of the rickets and vitamin deficiency, as well as the way such conditions were viewed in the early modern period.
