"And I Walk Home"

by: Wes Robert Ward

"Tonight the coldness creeps within me, within my blood-filled bones. Cracking & snapping, creating chaos as I sit here all alone.

Cold is the night outside in and all around me, the ground and the air all around is as cold as a glacier in the sea. And if perchance one floated by it wouldn't surprise me.

I sit outside in this coldness that has entered my soul and it is trying desperately to take the warmth of what I have left in me. The fire within my heart fights to keep lit and alive. And the coldness drives deep within me like a knife, stabbing me, killing me, murdering me.

My breath slowly seeps out as if my soul itself is escaping. Sure it tries to put up walls, but it is breaking.

My eyes gaze towards the night sky to see the stars twinkling at me. The trees are still and a stray cat walks by. I try to cry but my tears are freezing into icicles and I do not care who knows.

Alas though, my mind can only take so much in for the coldness is creeping in, seeping here and there, creeping everywhere.

My soul needs heat to survive, needs warmth to keep on beating. And if the drums stop, it becomes defeating. My battle will be over, no more war, no more strife, no more life.

Sadly with somewhat woe, I can not move though. Why? No more blinking my eyes, no more air escaping, no more worries, no more stress, no more nothing. With no fuss, it's because I have frozen\u2026 I have frozen to death. Nothing is left and like a burning candle\u2026 two wet fingers have put me out for good, no more burning wood.

And now Jesus is calling me to Heaven, he says it's warm up here. Says God wants me there, says I've done my time and told me it won't cost me a dime.

And as I head to the light, I look back only momentarily at what used to be me. Old and broken and frozen. And I look at my spirit now, my soul now, that's glowing in and all around me.... young, strong, and warm.

And I walk home."
