Narrative
The Blind Pig BBQ,
located in Jackson, Georgia, was officially opened for business in April of
2009 by owners Ron and Kathy Brown. The name of the restaurant originated
from Ron’s University of Georgia alumni rugby team, also known as ‘The Blind
Pigs’. The Blind Pig BBQ logo was also adapted
from the rugby team’s mascot, a caricature originally drawn by Dan Rabun.
The building in which
the restaurant is located was previously home to a BBQ restaurant known as
Mathis Brothers Bar-B-Q. Mathis Brothers Bar-B-Q served local
patrons from 1978 to 2003, and for six years after, the building stood
empty. Prior to opening day of The Blind Pig BBQ in April of 2009,
the entire building was renovated, save for one dining room and one wall in the
front room. The wall in the front room was constructed of diagonal
wooden planks, and a distinctive feature to Mathis Brothers Bar-B-Q; this wall
was kept as an ode to the well-loved local restaurant that had existed before. The
renovation also resulted in an extra dining room, as well as a poured-concrete,
back-porch patio.
After the initial
opening, the original days and hours of operation for The Blind Pig BBQ were
Wednesday to Saturday from 11 AM to 7 PM, and Sunday from 11 AM to 2 PM. After several months of operation, the hours were modified to
Wednesday to Thursday 11 AM to 8 PM, Friday and Saturday 11 AM to 9 PM, and
Sunday 11 AM to 8 PM to better suit the crowds. In the last ten
years, the menu itself has not changed except for small increases in prices to
reflect economic fluctuations. Through the years, Lunch Specials
were added to the menu as well as Sunday Specials, a “Piglet” Kid Menu, and
Homemade Desserts. Rosemary Lemonade (named for the rosemary herb
included in the lemonade) also became a staple item at the
restaurant.
In
May 2018 owner, Ron Brown, suffered a severe stroke, which left him unable to
cook. Management and operations of the restaurant were maintained by his
wife, Kathy Brown, and their son, Joseph Brown. For many years, the
restaurant has built its reputation and success on delicious recipes and
word of mouth within the local community.
