The Swedish art collector Ernest Thiel (1859–1947) in Stockholm, was Edvard Munch's (1863–1944) most dedicated patron in the first decade of the 1900s. Thiel purchased works directly from the artist, and commissioned several portraits.
Thiel wanted to fill an entire wall with paintings by Munch. In the Autumn of 1907, Thiel wrote with satisfaction, “My Munch wall will outshine any other in Europe – I can see that already.” In the course of the year, Thiel acquired several of Munchs most striking works, including On the Bridge (1903), and The Book Family (1903).
In the archives of the Thiel Gallery, there are 62 letters from Munch to Thiel, dating between 1905–1922. The majority of the letters are handwritten receipts for purchases of paintings, and a large number of prints. After intense periods in Lübeck, Weimar and Berlin, Munch travelled in the Spring of 1907 to the seaside resort of Warnemünde to recover. He found it a peaceful place to work and ended up staying for several months.
The letters between Thiel and Munch from this period, reveal the patron's important role in supporting Munch's stay in Warnemünde, as well as the artist's travels to cities such as Hamburg, Paris, Cologne, and Copenhagen.
Note in pencil by B. Linde; "This letter was sent, on request by Munch, from Mrs. Förster-Nietzsche to Thiel. See her letter to Thiel from April 14, 1906."
