"The Hallway"
by: Wes Robert Ward
There was something in the hallway. Yes, to say there was something in the hallway. Hard to explain, yet there it was. A nothingness of something.
What I felt I could not see and what was there made the hair on the back of my neck stand out and almost made me a nervous wreck.
A shimmering essence of whatever filled the dark hallway not far away and not too close. It stood there and waited. It waited and stood there. It had all the time in the world and I did not. Immortal in it's own self. Mortal I was myself.
I inched forward ever so lightly and whispered, "Will you let me pass?"
And it said in the nothingness of itself, "For a price, yes."
I gulped as I inched back, "My… my soul?"
It said within itself, "No, I want a song and dance number."
I felt flabbergasted, "What? Really?"
"It's been a while since I've seen a musical."
I asked, "Anything in particular? I do a great jazz hands and I know every song from Guys & Dolls."
It said within itself, "No, I am a fan of the legendary Fred Astaire… I want you to sing You're All The World To Me from the film Royal Wedding…."
I smiled, "No problem, I know the song very well."
".... while dancing on the walls and ceiling."
I replied with disbelief, "What? That's impossible. That was all film crew magic. They just rotated the whole room."
"I know that's why it will be very difficult for you especially in this small cramped hallway."
I said, "And what if I fall off the walls and ceiling which I know will probably happen?"
It said within itself, "I will devour you. First I will rip off your arms, then legs, and last your head. Soon after scoop out your brain, rip out your heart and organs, and then I will bathe in your hot blood."
I cried with fear as I got ready, "Oh Jesus help me. Save me from this demon in the hallway."
It said, "He walked on water, not on walls and ceiling."
And suddenly I felt his spirit inside me. And I danced. Not only did I dance on the floor, but the walls and ceiling too. All the while singing, You're All The World To Me.
The thing in the hallway said, "Not bad, you're no Fred Astaire, alas I'll let you pass and live. Now go and begone from my sight."
I ran past and out into the creepy old hotel lobby and fell to my knees, holding my hands in praise. I cried, "Thank you, Jesus."
"My pal Jesus had nothing to do with it, friend, but he did send me."
I looked up near the old front desk and gasped. There standing was a thin man in a tuxedo with a big tophat and cane.
Tapping the cane on the floor, then doing a swing around on his tap shoes he disappeared into thin air.
"It was right though," said the disappearing figure, "You're no Fred Astaire, kid."
I couldn't believe what I saw. I was stunned to say the least. And yet I knew that I was saved by an Angel. I not only thanked him but also God and Jesus and whoever else that heard my words.
It was raining hard outside, I unfolded my umbrella and as I opened the front door I heard in the rain, "Now do Gene Kelly dancing and Singing In The Rain."
I looked to heaven again for that other Angel and I sure wasn't disappointed when I saw a figure wearing a grey wool suit with an umbrella just skipping down a cloud of rain.
Angels are not all feathers and wings and halos too. Many come with tophats, canes, and tap dancing shoes.
And with my umbrella in hand, I sang, and skipped, and danced out into the rainy land. What a glorious feeling, I was happy again.
The End. ☔
