"The End Is Near"
by: Wes Robert Ward
Standing on a cliffside overlooking the Sea of Serenity, I noticed an old weathered sign that said, 'The End Is Near'.
Oh, Brutus lead me your ear, the madness of the mind that wrote such gibberish in those four words gives us much purge in our own mortality.
Oh, what brevity of human life exists in such a sign as that. And as I stand atop the steep rock face at the edge of the sea, I ponder what is the end and what could be as near to it as we thought or think it be.
"The end is near," I stand and say upon the rock looking towards the sun, "Or are we near the end?"
Time is of the essence they say. We make it up as we age and go along day by day. Life is just a flicker of a flame and all it takes is a puff of breath to blow us out. And without no doubt we make our own bed with the dead.
Shakespeare once said, "To be or not to be, that is the question." But Yorick, what can we be if we can not be what we are? Questions are easier to ask than the answers that lie in the riddle itself.
And as I stand among the cool sea air and take notice of the sign that has been there for possibly a hundred years or more, I wonder if the man who put the sign there was suicidal or homicidal, hopefully not.
Did the man put up such a sign as this for others who wanted to die and jump to the watery rocky grave down below? Or did he see a future for all of us as we near the end? Was he a fiend or friend?
And with that thought in my mind I leaped. Or thought I'd leap to my own end, but realized that tomorrow was just another day. Then I said matter of factly to the sign before me, "Near the end for many, not me, not yet."
And I walk down off the cliffside, onward to home, house, and what heaven lays before me.
