"The Old Man, The Dog, And The Graveyard"

by: Wes Robert Ward

Once upon a time there was an old man and his dog that spent their time in the graveyard. Kind of sad it almost sounds, but not entirely for this old man liked to travel from one tomb to another and talk to the dead.

He'd sit and chat away all day about this and that, and of course he'd know if their ghost was there by the simple wag of the dog's tail.

None of the ghosts were evil of course and if they were the dog would growl, but with the wag of his tail the old man knew the ghosts enjoyed his company and the dog too.

From the age of 60 to the fragile age of 90, the old man kept coming back. In the beginning it was with the first dog, then the son of that dog, and then the grandson of that dog.

Oh sure there were many, many before from his days of youth but that number probably goes beyond his own age and yet he can not remember how many to begin with. Age can do that to memory, you know. Memories sadly fade as the days and years pass, alas only those that remember are truly blessed.

Towards the end of the old man's life, he sat in front of his old wife's tombstone and he said to his wife and this new pup, "These old bones are just as old as these old tombs and now that I've seen and visited you all, including the love of my life\u2026 I think it's time for me to finally rest."

And the old man dropped his head then died. And the young dog whined then slowly wagged his tail because he knew the old man was still there.

Soon after the son of that old man with the old man's dog would travel that graveyard the very next day. He was 60 when his father passed away the day before and now he feels that he must walk the graveyard with the young pup his father left behind.

Yes, it was a long, hard road of death and tombs, but someone has to make that walk the old man's son thought. There should always be an old man in a graveyard, and also an old woman, but that's another story for another time. For now let us see old men in graveyards and nothing else but old men in graveyards.

The old man's son looked down at the pup, "Let's go for a walk and say hello to some old friends and new. From A to Z, we have a sea of dead to uncover that only old men and dogs can discover."

The dog wagged his tail, and with that said they both took a slow walk through the graveyard. And the sun shined bright that day, shined brighter than it ever did on that graveyard. No gloom, nothing gray, for it was a good day for the dead, and for the living for that matter.

And the 90 year spirit of the old man himself smiled by his tomb, then took a walk to the light. And as he crossed a hill of tombs he disappeared within the sunlight\u2026 with many and I mean many of his ghost dogs following him.

The End.
