"Tubok's Eye"
by: Wes Robert Ward
Tubok the Elephant lived a long uneventful life in Thailand. He carried many people on his back all his life and he even mingled with his herd most of his life as well. He flapped his ears when he was excited and he stomped his foot when he was upset.
But no one would've ever thought Tubok's Eye was cursed by something so evil words was hard to describe. All that was ever said was Tubok's Eye was cursed with an evil beyond this world of knowledge and understanding.
One night as Tubok was eating grass nearby with the herd sleeping close by something not of this world, a dark unknown came drifting into the herd encampment of that night as Tubok stood there being the alpha male of the herd.
A dark wraith or evil spawn from only the Lord knows where drifted like a dark black silk-like ghost towards Tubok. Mayhap not a ghost, but somewhat a horrific demon from far off where no one dares to go.
Tubok didn't fear anything in his whole entire life and this entity of whatever it was didn't bother him either. He just flopped his ears with irritation and annoyance as this whatever it was interrupted his midnight snack.
The dark wraith says in an eerie demonic voice, "Have no fear, Tubok. For Jinx just wants to give you a gift. Yes, a gift that will clear the blindness forming in your eye there."
Tubok blinked his eye as he watched the whatever it was wave it's dark black hands about creating an eerie green glow.
The dark wraith chuckled with a dark cackle, "Yes, my big friend. It may not be the peanuts you eat, but it will create something very interesting within your dying eye. Chaos, mayhem, destruction, death, just many wondrous visions inside your eye. Such delicious fun, hold still…"
With that said the dark wraith shot from his oily black hand that green glow, and that whatever it was went deep within Tubok's Eye.
Tubok bellowed with anger and hurt as he felt his eye being filled with a sharp sting, a sting so fierce it soared into his brain. To him it felt like somebody stabbed him. He rose up and galloped all over waking up all the elephants who pretty much freaked out with him as he bellowed Elephant noises all of the place.
The whole herd ran off through the nearby jungle brush away from the prairie thinking Tubok had lost his mind.
Tubok calmed down eventually as he wandered towards the river away from the dark thing that caused his pain. He looked back once at whatever it was that sat itself in a tree nearby, and huffed at it with pure hatred.
The dark wraith grinned evilly, "Go Tubok, go drink your water and eat your grass, and live your Elephant life with the others, but know this your eye will live on when you rot the ground with your caucus."
Tubok blew his trunk with annoyance, flopped his ears with ignorance, and walked slowly to the river as he wagged his small tail being as upset as an Elephant can get.
And the dark wraith disappeared in a puff of dark green smoke in the dark night sky of that tree never to be seen again by Tubok or any Elephant for that matter.
For Jinx, was something between up and below, but mingled with the living because mortals whether they be animal or man, amused Jinx to no end.
As the days went by and the years flew by, Tubok grew old. But as those days and years went by, there were many many bad things that occurred around Tubok without no one realizing it until Tubok's death.
Death, many deaths occurred. Also calamities all around. Tubok would just look at someone, human most likely, and the next day that person would either be dead the next day or hurt real bad, or some other bad situation or whatsoever.
For example in deaths: heart attacks, suicides, hit by a car, lion attack, natural causes, small plane crash, fire, murder, etc, etc, etc...
Other examples in other cases: a broken arm or leg, paralyzed, home burned down, farm drought or destroyed by locusts or whatever, basically anything other than death. Even imprisonment on some crime.
The day Tubok died and rotted the ground like the dark wraith said he'd do of natural causes, a young soldier came along, collected his tusk to sell on the black market and thought nothing else was left of Tubok until he saw the eye which was an almond colored oddity to him.
The young soldier took his knife and took out Tubok's Eye among his rotting head and held it with his bloody hand. It didn't feel like an eye, but of marble-like stone. Eyes, even Elephant eyes were not supposed to be like that. He went to the other eye of Tubok and noticed it was just an ordinary eye that began rotting along with Tubok.
The young soldier cleaned Tubok's strange stone eye with a cloth, then held it towards the warm sun thinking, 'Whatever this is might bring me a little more on the black market.'
The next night he was murdered in cold blood and robbed of his treasure. His murderer was caught and hung. The arresting officer claimed the eye as a memento for himself. A week later he hung himself. An odd coincidence, yes, but strange indeed.
Soon after Tubok's Eye got around. It didn't just stay in Thailand, no it traveled the world with many greedy individuals that claimed it for themselves through murder or thievery.
From Thailand to Pakistan to Saudi Arabia, into Africa through Egypt, traveled over sea into Greece then Spain. Stayed in Paris, France for a long time before being stolen. The United Kingdom even the United States had Tubok's Eye for awhile. Even crossed into South America and found the frozen tundra of Siberia, Russia. Then back through into the eastern oriental.
None of the people that had Tubok's Eye had good endings. Tragedy occurred with all of them. Either death, hospitalization, or imprisonment followed afterwards.
Where is Tubok's Eye now, you say? Perhaps not to far from any of us. Just be careful what you find or pick up in the game of Finder's Keepers.
Some things should be left alone, like the Ark of the Covenant being opened by sinners, like the Hellraiser puzzle box, like the game board of Jumanji.
Tubok himself had walked many miles in life and many miles before he left this life, but Tubok's Eye will be here forever… and it will always leave a trail of death and calamity for miles and miles.
And those that pick up Tubok's Eye are simply and horribly jinxed.
The End. 🐘
