Throughout his career, the Brooklyn artist James Ryder van Brunt specialized in watercolors of local historic sites, farmhouses, and churches painted in a conventional, topographical style. His subject matter reflected a personal interest in the region\u2019s Dutch heritage; his own ancestors had settled here in the seventeenth century.
