This unusually long composition illustrates the great festival known as "river opening," which marked the beginning of summer on Edo's Sumida River. On a roofed boat at the center of the picture, women watch a geisha maneuver a dancing puppet. Like the Kiyonaga triptych nearby, the boat carries an arrangement of pine, irises, and peonies. In this case, they are placed upon a lacquer tray bearing delectable snacks for the passengers.
