This article is about the earliest legal documents written in Brazil. Surprisingly, their authors were not Portuguese, but officials at the service of the Spanish Crown on their way to Asia. Written in Pernambuco (1526), in the Island of Santa Catarina (1527), and in São Vicente (1530), the texts comprise a lawsuit filed by Sebastian Cabot against three men from his top brass who were charged with conspiracy to murder him and lead a mutiny. They were marooned on the Island of Santa Catarina in Feb. 1527.
