S\u014dhei studied under Tanomura Chikuden (1779\u20131835), a leading literati painter and native of S\u014dhei\u2019s hometown on the southern island of Ky\u016bsh\u016b . In this painting, completed only about eight years prior to his premature death, S\u014dhei depicted the vitality of young, growing bamboo, one of his favorite subjects. S\u014dhei\u2019s painting technique contained within it a subtle contrast: each leaf and the trunk of the plant are meticulously outlined with smooth, thin brushstrokes against the delicate ink wash that defines the rock and the groundline.
