During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Gujarat, in western India, supplied embroideries of the highest quality to the Mughal court. As European traders began to arrive on Indian shores, production from this region adjusted to satisfy the tastes of markets abroad, particularly in Portugal and England. To create wares that would be popular overseas, embroiderers in Gujarat worked from existing European textiles. The combination of a spiraling vine pattern and playful animals on this bedcover clearly has its source in English embroideries. Many of the animals depicted are, however, found only in India.
