This rare bronze object was likely a censer with a pierced, conical lid. The base is supported by an encircling ring of ganas (semidivineprotective deities) that are surmounted by an open lotus flower supporting a narrative that runs around the shoulder of the vessel. Illustrating an episode from one of the Buddha's former lives (jatakas), this scene ends with a public musical competition between two harp (vina) players. Although this censer was found in Malaysia, it may have been an import from the southeast Indian province of Andhra Pradesh, as suggested by the extended Buddhist narrative with elongated figures, the form of the ganas, and the superb casting.
