The roundels on the nuihaku shown here echo the patterns found on three of the garments pictured on the nearby pair of painted screens. The screens were painted in the early Edo period when roundels of this kind were associated with the fashionable attire of the military elite. In this late Edo-period Noh costume, however, the pattern reflects the gradual codification of theatrical robes and their divergence from contemporary fashion.
