Ono no Komachi, the Heian poetess seen here in Edo dress, wears a robe decorated with cherry flowers, which blossom in her hair as well. The bellflowers painted on her fan, symbols of autumn, contrast with a spray of spring cherry on the ground before her. A poem in a cartouche spells out the theme of transience that is at the very heart of her legend. Komachi wrote several poems on growing old, using the color of flowers to suggest physical appearance:Alas, it is the flowerwithin man's heartwhich fadeswithout signs of fading color.
