The Chinese characters painted on the white enamel dial of this watch are evidence that James Cox was not the only provider of watches for the Chinese market in eighteenth-century England. The figured agate framed in rococo ornamented gold of the outer case is very close in style and in use of materials to some of the objects bearing Cox\u2019s name that can be dated to the 1760s. The watchcase may have been made by a goldsmith who worked for both Cox and Champion.
