Atisha, an Indian monk, was a seminal figure in Tibetan history who revived Tibetan Buddhism in the eleventh century, leading to what is called the Second Propagation of the Faith as well as to the growth of monasticism. An inscription on the reverse of this thangka identifies the portrait and provides sound evidence for its early dating. This portrait and a related work in the Museum\u2019s collection that is similar in style, size, and date are the earliest Tibetan thangka portraits known. In both, the skin of the hierarchs is gilded; in the related painting, the lama is placed in a temple-like setting that proclaims his deified status. Although Atisha appears as an auxiliary figure in at least one painting of the late eleventh century, this is the earliest known full portrait of him.Free picture Portrait of Atisha integrated with the OffiDocs web apps
