The dou was an important ritual vessel during Eastern Zhou times (770-256 B.C.). Its tall stem suggests that it was a type that originated in northern China. The elaborate designs of interlaced dragons and the felines on this vessel suggest it was made at the well-known bronze foundry in Houma County at China's northern frontier where Chinese craftsmen not only cast ritual vessels but also produced bronze items for their nomadic neighbors.
