This drawing and the large Head of Krishna (18.85.2) are believed to have been made as preparatory studies for a mural at the Jaipur palace depicting the circle dance (Ras Lila). In this mythic episode from the life of the Hindu god Krishna, the deity multiplies himself many times so that he can dance with his beloved Radha as well as with all the female cowherds in the village where he grew up. Indeed, Sahib Ram\u2019s patron, Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, is said to have performed the Ras Lila dressed as Krishna, with his wives and courtesans playing the cowherds. Like the Head of Krishna, this drawing has been pricked to allow the image to be transferred to a wall; however, the sheet was not reworked into a finished drawing.
