This type of ankle-length one-piece costume for a male role is based on nonofficial clothing worn by elite men during the Ming dynasty (1368\u20131644). The costume is made from an embroidered textile in a kind of "needlepoint" technique worked in silk on a fine silk gauze. The color choices and uniformity of tension are remarkable. A costume of the same form and technique\u2014but different in color and pattern\u2014is included among the theatrical costumes in the Qing court collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing.
