Saint John the Evangelist, a young man with golden hair, carries as his attribute a book, referring to his authorship of the Fourth Gospel and the Book of Revelation.

Recent conservation treatment has revealed the refined qualities and vivid colors of the painting, as well as the decorative detailing of the textiles behind the Madonna and beneath her feet.
