During the Second World War the United States Army created "Ghost Armies" to deceive the Germans into believing they had more men and equipment than they really had prior to the Normandy Invasion on D0-Day (June 6th 1944). These are actual patches made a worn by a small group of soldiers with inflatable rubber aircraft and vehicles that German reconnaissance planes spotted in field below.
