A single chevron point up of a Private First Class (Pay Grade 6) with one to six arcs below, often with a caduceus, cook's cap, crossed hammers, horse-shoe, tank, etc. They might have been authorized in 1920, but do not appear the following year. Private First Class with a specialty was paid extra level one to level 6 being the highest. The P.X. (Post Exchange) sold them as they were not issued by the supply sergeants, but commanding officers unofficially sanctioned these chevrons being worn nonetheless! With the introduction of Technician in pay grade 3, 4 and 5, letter T was worn below 3 chevrons and above an arc below; Technician 4 wore a T under 3 chevrons without an arc below and Technician 4 wore a T below two chevrons. They were paid as either Staff Sergeant, Sergeant or Corporal, but had no command as an N.C.O., unless appointed by a superior officer in their own section just as a private without a chevron if a superior officer appoints them in charge of a group of other privates.Free picture 1920-1938 Unauthorized Private First Class Specialist Chevrons integrated with the OffiDocs web apps
