"PLANS OF WOODEN VESSELS, selected as types from one hundred and fifty of various kinds and descriptions, from a fishing smack to the largest clipper ships and vessels of war, both sail and steam, built by Wm. H. Webb, in the city of New York, from the year 1840 to 1869." by Webb, William H. ["The Book of Plates", printed about 1895.]These are 400 dpi scans of unbound ship plans. Original: landscape folio [41x54cm]. A rare portfolio of ships' plans produced by William Webb shortly after his retirement, in 1895. These are scans of the loose sheets, as issued, designed to be bound into two volumes [separate Title pages and Contents pages for volumes I and II are included], and contain a total of 121 plates, many multi-folding, and illustrating 55 vessels in all. Some of the unbound plan halves had been pasted together into single sheets before scanning.
William Webb was one of the greatest American shipbuilders of the 19th century, and although best known for his fine clipper ships, his New York shipyard also produced a wide range of sailing and steam-powered vessels. This collection of plans was never commercially published, with most copies being donated to libraries and other institutions, and subsequently bound up into smaller-format volumes.
All of the William Webb ships are well-researched in an appendix (pp 148-231) of the Webb Institute's centennial biography of Webb:
