Photos from an impromptu trip to Yosemite National Park, during my last summer as a student at UC Berkeley. My friends Ken, Phil, Janae, and Clara had been planning the trip for a while, apparently, but I only heard about and joined the group the night before we were to leave. My camera was ready, though, and that was the main thing for me.
Day 1, half the time we were on a train and then shuttle, traveling to the park, so we didn’t go far from our campsite on the Yosemite Valley Floor. Still gorgeous, though.
Day 2, we hiked up the Mist Trail to our next campsite -- the mist here being spray coming off the waterfall. Much of the trail here is built like a staircase, which makes it a little easier and safer, since the trail is so narrow, steep, and crowded — it’s a popular route for Yosemite hikers, and we spent a lot of time sliding past other people coming up and down.
Day 3, we did Clouds Rest. Climbing this mountain is easily the most physically strenuous thing I’ve done in my life (so far?), but the view at the top was incredibly rewarding. When we got back to our site that afternoon, Ken asked me and Phil if we wanted to climb half dome that night. I was utterly exhausted, and even Phil, who never seemed to tire during the hike, wasn’t up for it. Ken is a beast, though, and he was determined to sleep at Half Dome, so he could watch the sun rise from the top. He’d rush to catch up with us the next day.
Day 4, we hiked up to Glacier Point — and the shop and parking lot, to meet with Janae and Clara, who spent their long weekend camping and hiking in different parts of the park.
Yosemite is of course beautiful beyond words. Is it strange to say?, I almost felt like I belonged there.
