Zimmer Tower
Sketched from life with fountain pens filled with irongall ink and Noodler's Gruene Cactus.
A tad crooked and got the proportions wrong, but still looks neat imo maybe the loudass (other) tourists at the other tables of cafe were too distracting :D
Zimmer's masterpieces
Jubilee Clock
It took Louis Zimmer five years to make his Jubilee Clock. In 1930 he presented it to Lier, the town of his birth, on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the independence of Belgium. Hence the name ‘Jubilee Clock’.
The clock was installed in the restored medieval Cornelius Tower, at which time it was renamed the Zimmer Tower.
13 different dials on the Jubilee Clock:
the official time
equation of time
zodiac
solar orb and dominical letter
the weekdays
the terrestrial globe
the months
the dates
the seasons
tides
moon's age
phases of the moon
moon's orbit with epact
Wonder Clock
Louis Zimmer built the Wonder Clock, which consists of three panels, on the occasion of the World Fair in Brussels in 1935. The times given by it are sidereal time (star time), Belgian legal time (GMT + 1) and decimal time.
This clock also contains the slowest moving mechanical hand in the world: one rotation per 25,800 years together with the precession of the Earth.
The clock was later exhibited in New York, where it impressed Einstein.
In 1960 the Wonder Clock was installed in the Zimmer Pavilion next to the Zimmer Tower.
Astronomic Studio
The Astronomic Studio on the first floor illustrates how the universe works (including the rotations of the planets). This studio is driven by the same master clock as the Jubilee Clock.
Louis Zimmer realised that the public was unfamiliar with astronomy and therefore decided to set up the Astronomic Studio in 1932. Thanks to a precisely worked out mechanism we are able to gain a clear understanding of the universe and the solar system.
Zimmer Tower and exhibition on the theme of time and space
In the Zimmer Museum you will discover the life’s work of Louis Zimmer: the Jubilee Clock, the Astronomic Studio and the Wonder Clock.
The time and space exhibition illustrates the big bang and the birth of the universe.
