Mao by Mao 毛澤東獨白 Mao par lui-même was at 1977 Cannes Film Festival the French entry in the short films competition. On September 9th, 1976, the day MaoZeDong died, it had been the core of the evening special on France TV network A2. Though signed by Viénet (and his two assistants Francis Deron and Wu XingMing), the 26 minutes film is acually by Mao ZeDong himself -- as there is not a single comment by Viénet on the soundtrack, but just quotes of Mao's talks to red guards during the anti-cultural counter-revolution, confronted to rare historical footage -- including bits from an exceptional relic : 延安內貌, the first newsreel (in YanAn) when Mao (in 1938) is seen moving on screen with Liu ShaoQi, Kang Sheng, Ding Ling, etc. The day Mao passed away, French TV networks discovered that they had no obituary to lift from their drawers : they had been convinced, under the siritual guidance of France holy-water-soaked catholic-maoists (Léon Vandermeersch, Father Cardonnel, Jean-Luc Domenach, etc.), that Mao was a god, and thus could not die. After the screening, came a debate - live - which allowed Viénet to throw some shit in the fans of three leading maoist propagandists : Joris Ivens, Marceline Loridan, Maria-Antonietta Macchiochi.
