A little-known side effect of serious heart surgery is
depression. A serious procedure like a coronary artery bypass graft can take a
lot out of a patient. Even though the science and technology behind the
coronary bypass operation has improved, the incidence of depression has gone
up. Depression after both heart attacks and open heart surgery seems to be
increasing in frequency. One reason cited for the increase in depression is the
new trend toward shorter hospital stays after serious cardiac events.

In different times, after a heart attack or open heart
surgery, patients would have up to two weeks in the hospital to become
acclimated to their new reality, to accept their new condition, and to take in
