The Chill Room, 14 May 2021, at 9pm PT on killradio dot org

It was three years from I Want to Hold Your Hand to Tomorrow Never Knows for the Beatles.

In early 1966, John Lennon purchased Timothy Leary's book The Psychedelic Experience, an adaptation of the Egyptian Book of the Dead as a user's guide to LSD, and he wrote this song soon afterwards. It is based on a drone in C Major (played by George Harrison on the tamboura) and Paul McCartney brought in the tape loops used to create an otherworldly feel. John wanted his voice to sound like a "monk on a far-off mountain" so his voice was tracked in ADT through the revolving Leslie speaker -- which was then used for the album title, Revolver.

This was the first song recorded for that album.

Tonight we are playing different artists taking on this Lennon psychedelic dream state. This was part of a full evening of Chill Room material in 2012. I thought of re-doing it or maybe updating it -- I didn't even include Take One by the Beatles, which is available. But I recently listened to a whole bunch of more recent TNK covers, and none seemed more particularly inspired than what was already here. Fact is, beyond the original from 1966, Morgana King and Junior Parker kind of take the cake, you know? So here is a remastered Chill Room. Consider it an audio hors d'oeuvre.

256k VBR, 54 minutes, turn off your mind, relax, and float downstream

Setlist: The song Tomorrow Never knows as performed by Danielle Dax (1990) / The Beatles (alternate mono mix 1966) / Tangerine Dream (2008) / Phil Manzanera and 801 (1976) / Morgana King (1968) / Jimi Hendrix (1968) / Monsoon with Sheila Chandra (1982) / Steve Marcus (1968) / Jad Fair and Daniel Johnston (1989) / Chemical Bros (live, 2009) / The Helio Sequence (2000) / Dirty Hertz remix (2004) / Alison Mosshart and Carla Azur (from Sucker Punch 2011) / Leftside Wobble remix (2012) / The Beatles (LOVE version by George and Giles Martin with Within You and Without You, 2006) / Junior Parker (1970) / The Beatles (2009 stereo remaster)

Note: The Chemical Bros version played comes from a concert recording, and in fact it is mostly the Junior Parker version sampled and replayed. It still works. Thanks to my listeners, the 910, Clinton Heylin, killradio, the Internet Archive, and wfmu.org. Comments, reviews, favorites, anything would be appreciated.
